The hardest SAT Math topics
Not every topic deserves the same attention. The four areas of SAT Math are not equal in size, and they are not equal in difficulty. Knowing roughly how the questions divide, and where the hard ones cluster, helps you point your study time at the places it will do the most good.
How the section divides
By topic, Algebra is the largest area at roughly a third of the questions. Advanced Math follows at a little over a quarter. Problem Solving and Data Analysis sits near a fifth, and Geometry and Trig is the smallest at under a fifth. These are approximations, but the order holds across published practice material.
Where hard questions cluster
Advanced Math and Geometry hold the highest share of hard questions, so each one costs more effort to secure. Algebra leans easy, which makes it the fastest place to add marks. Problem Solving and Data Analysis leans easy too, but the trap there is careful reading rather than the arithmetic itself.
Where effort pays off most
Start with Algebra. The questions are frequent and mostly approachable, so accuracy climbs quickly. Then move to Advanced Math quadratics and exponentials, which separate the middle scores from the top. Geometry rewards anyone who drills the handful of formulas and the right triangle rules.
Difficulty is not all or nothing
Across the section, roughly a third of questions are easy, a third medium and a third hard. Hard questions are therefore not rare, and the second module leans harder or easier depending on the first. That is the case for steady accuracy across all four areas rather than chasing only the toughest ones.
