SAT Math length and question count
The digital SAT math section comes in two modules. Each holds 22 questions and gives you 35 minutes, so the whole section is 44 questions in 70 minutes. The second module adapts to your first, which changes what you should expect from the clock.
The two modules
Module one is the same for everyone. Module two is chosen for you based on how you performed in module one, so two students can sit the same exam and see different second halves. Both modules contain 22 questions, and both give you 35 minutes. The clock is separate for each, so a slow start does not eat the second module.
The per question arithmetic
Forty four questions in 70 minutes leaves a little under 95 seconds per question on average. That average is misleading, because easy questions take far less and hard ones take more. Aim to bank time early, then spend it where a question actually needs work. If something stalls, skip it and return.
Where the minutes go
Timing trouble is rarely about raw speed. It is about deciding too late which route to take. A rough split that works for many students:
- First 40 seconds: read carefully and note what is being asked
- Next 20 seconds: pick the fast route or the full solve
- If a question runs past two minutes, flag it and move on
- Keep the final three minutes for flagged questions
What the adaptive module changes
If module one goes well, module two leans harder, and questions that felt steady can suddenly take longer. If module one goes badly, module two leans easier and the ceiling is lower. Either way the length is identical, so plan your timing for the questions in front of you, not for a version you hoped to get.
