How to enter grid-in answers

About one in four math questions gives you no answer choices. You solve it, then type the answer into a short field. The math can be perfect and the mark still lost, so the format deserves ten minutes of practice.

01What a grid-in actually is

The official name is a student-produced response. Instead of selecting a letter, you enter a value in a field under the question. Some of these questions accept more than one correct value, but you only enter one. There is no partial credit, so the answer has to arrive in a form the grader reads as your number.

02The field is short, so decide the form first

The answer field holds about five characters, and a minus sign or a decimal point uses some of them. That is why an improper fraction is often the safest form: 7/2 fits in three characters, while a long decimal may not fit at all.

  • 7/2 is accepted. 3 1/2 is not, because mixed numbers cannot be entered.
  • A negative answer is fine. The minus sign counts as one of the characters.
  • Large answers drop the comma: enter 1200, not 1,200.

03Fractions and decimals both work

A fraction is exact, and 3/8 and 0.375 are read as the same number. Where the fraction does not fit or the question forces a decimal, use enough digits to land on the value rather than rounding to one or two places.

04Repeating decimals: use the fraction

If the answer is 2/3, type 2/3. A truncated 0.66 is a different number and will not match. If you must enter a decimal for a repeating value, fill the field instead of stopping early, because the grader compares values, not intentions.

05What the field rejects

Anything that is not part of the number. The grader cannot interpret symbols or words, so a correct value wrapped in decoration is read as a wrong answer.

  • Percent signs: enter 45, not 45%
  • Dollar signs and units: enter 12.5, not $12.50
  • Commas in large numbers
  • Letters and words, including x =
  • Mixed numbers, as above

06The check before you move on

Read the final line of the question again. It names the quantity and often the rounding. If it asked for the nearest tenth, your answer should carry one decimal place. If it asked for a count of people, a fraction is a sign that something upstream went wrong.

07Questions

Do I have to simplify fractions on the SAT?

No. Equivalent fractions are read as the same value, so 6/8 and 3/4 both work, as long as the characters fit in the field.

Can a grid-in answer be negative?

Yes. Type the minus sign directly before the number. It uses one of the characters, so leave room for it when you decide between a fraction and a decimal.

What if more than one answer is correct?

Enter either one. Some of these questions are built to accept more than one value, and you are only asked to supply one.

Why was my correct answer marked wrong?

Usually a form problem: a percent sign, a unit, a comma, a mixed number, or a decimal cut too short to match the value.
